BIRDS COMMUNITY STRUCTURE AND ECOLOGY
Abstract: We studied the associations between bird abundance, richness, diversity, evenness and habitat characteristics at a small scale of investigation. Using surveys conducted over three days on 9 sites at 2 locations in the Palmetum and JCU campus of Townsville Queensland. A total of 555 individual birds from 54 species were documented along the 9 sites. Habitat occupancy or distribution and individual bird species abundance have strong correlations with various vegetation structures. Thus, nine different sites with different habitats have been categorized in to three clusters. Cluster 1 had the highest diversity and evenness but was lowest in abundance and species richness. In contrast, cluster 2 and 3 had high species abundance and species richness but were low in diversity and evenness.
Key words: bird abundance, bird diversity, bird richness, bird evenness, bird community structure
